Dear Colleague,

You are hereby invited to a Nordic workshop where we will focus on new trends in the development of the law with a special focus on the Nordic perspectives. 

The workshop's academic framework is predominantly sociological legal methodologies in a wide sense. The workshop thus applies both to sociologists of law and other researchers with legal and broader perspectives.

The workshop will focus on the developments of the law in the Nordic countries, including trends of legal internationalisation and particularly transnational tendencies and the perspectives which these may entail. We encourage a multidisciplinary approach across the traditional legal disciplines.

Themes for papers: 

  • The Nordic legal family - does it exist? Is it in crisis?
  • New norms - new legal actors
  • Access to Justice
  • ADR, restorative justice, problem solving justice - is there a Nordic 'model'?
  • Private-law implications of the Nordic welfare state
  • Legal challenges with new technology, including digitalisation, internet commerce and electronic means of payment
  • Non-lawyers´ application of law
  • Voluntary and private actors in the creation and application of law
  • Children and young people - legal status and juridification of childhood and youth

Language and workshop format

At the workshop presentations and discussions take place in the following languages: Norwegian, Swedish, Danish and English.

The workshop will be a mix between lectures in plenum and workshops with presentations and discussions.

The research center INTRAlaw (International and TRAnsnationel tendencies of LAW) is the organiser of the workshop with the group behind the Nordic subproject as initiator and programme planner. Already this group's academic profile indicates the whirr of wings that we would like to produce in the course of the workshop: Anne-Dorte Bruun Nielsen (Property Law and Consumer Law), Anette Storgaard (Criminology and Mediation) and Bettina Lemann Kristiansen (Sociology of law and Social Law).  

Registration deadline and abstracts

Deadline for registration for the workshop is 4 November 4, 2016. However, as there are a limited number of places, it is recommended that you register as soon as possible – you can register here:

If you want to participate with a presentation at one of the workshop sessions, please send your abstract to Tinna Meyer ( no later than 10 October. Abstracts should be of a maximum of 300 words, excl. title, the author´s  name, affiliation and email address. Please indicate which of the thematic headings above is most appropriate for  your proposal. You will be notified not later than 21 October, as to whether your abstract has been accepted for presentation at the workshop.

Practical information

Participants must cover the costs of travel and accommodation themselves. To ensure that there is hotel rooms for everybody, we have booked a number of rooms in two centrally located hotels. You are responsible for arranging your travel and accommodation yourself, and is not bound to use the pre-booked hotels. Please book your room at the conference hotels no later than 30 days before the conference.
