New major reference book on EU law published by researchers at the Department of Law
EU External Relations Law: The Cases in Context, co-edited by Graham Butler, Associate Professor, was published in Summer 2022 by Hart Publishing/Bloomsbury, and includes chapters by many researchers at the Department of Law.
In Summer 2022, a new book titled ‘EU External Relations Law: The Cases in Context’ (Oxford: Hart Publishing/Bloomsbury) was published, which was co-edited by Graham Butler, Associate Professor at the Department of Law at Aarhus University.
Marking the 50th anniversary of the influential ERTA doctrine in EU law, establishing the doctrine of implied external competence of the Union, the book analyses and contextualises the entire breadth of the jurisprudence of EU external relations law through a systematic, case-by-case account of the field. This is owed to the fact that the entire legal framework of EU external relations has been built from the ground up by the case-law of the Court of Justice of the European Union over the past half century.
A major collaborative effort housed out of the Department of Law at Aarhus University, in collaboration with the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, the book features 92 chapters, with over 101 authors, including established academic scholars from Europe’s leading universities; judges, former judges, and Advocates General of the Court of Justice and General Court; judges of national courts, including supreme and constitutional courts; agents of EU institutions and Member States; civil and public servants at national ministries and international organisations; and legal practitioners in the field of EU law.
The book includes chapters by the President of the Court of Justice of the European Union, Koen Lenaerts, and the First Advocate General of the Court of Justice of the European Union, Maciej Szpunar.
Lawyers past and present at the Department of Law at Aarhus University that contributed to various chapters in the book includes Graham Butler, Louise Halleskov, Katarina Hyltén-Cavallius, Hannes Lenk, and Karsten Engsig Sørensen. Other Danish collaboration involved lawyers from other Danish universities, the Danish courts, lawyers in Kammeradvokaten, and the Ministry for Justice.
The book will be launched at the Black Diamond, the Royal Danish Library, by Lars Bay Larsen, the Vice-President and Judge of Court of Justice of the European Union, and former Judge at the Supreme Court of Denmark, in Autumn 2022.
