Seminar on the Geneva Conventions

The Work on the New ICRC’s Commentaries on the Geneva Conventions (1949) and the Additional Protocols (1977) with Dr. Eve La Haye.

The Department of Law, Aarhus University, will host an afternoon seminar on the development of the Geneva Conventions, where Dr. Eve La Haye, Legal Adviser, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), will give a presentation of the ICRC’s project on the new commentaries on the Geneva treaties, and current issues on the Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC), also termed International Humanitarian Law (IHL), will be discussed.

There will be special focus on the law applicable in Non International Armed Conflicts and the so-called Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions.

The seminar is jointly organised by the Department of Law and the Danish Red Cross. It forms part of the master course ‘The Law of Armed Conflict and Military Operations’ at the Department of Law.

Dr. Eve La Haye works as a legal adviser for the ICRC project to update the Commentaries on the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their Additional Protocols of 1977, in the legal division of the ICRC.

From 2001 to 2005, before joining the ICRC in 2007, she worked as an associate legal officer at the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).

She holds a doctorate in law from the London School of Economics (LSE) and a Master in international relations and international law from the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva.

Dr. Eve La Haye  has given lessons at several universities and has published several articles on international humanitarian law and international criminal law as well as a monograph entitled "War Crimes in Internal Armed Conflicts" (Cambridge University Press, 2008) which was awarded the Lieber Prize of the American Society of International Law.
